2027 Race Sparks Fresh Wave of Defections in House of Representatives

Defections Increase in House of Representatives as Lawmakers Switch Parties Ahead of 2027 Elections

Political realignments are gaining momentum in Nigeria’s House of Representatives as several lawmakers have changed party affiliation ahead of the 2027 general elections.

According to reports, members from the New Nigeria Peoples Party and the Peoples Democratic Party have recently moved to other political platforms, including the All Progressives Congress and the African Democratic Congress.

The defections were announced during plenary, presided over by the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Tajudeen Abbas. Some of the lawmakers who switched parties cited internal disagreements and leadership issues within their former parties as reasons for their decisions.

The development follows a series of similar moves recorded earlier, highlighting growing shifts within the political landscape as parties begin to reposition ahead of the next election cycle.

Despite the changes, the All Progressives Congress continues to maintain a strong presence in the House, while other parties are adjusting their positions as more lawmakers reconsider their affiliations.

Observers say the trend may continue in the coming months as political actors align themselves with parties they believe offer better opportunities ahead of the 2027 elections.
