Ekiti State Holds Emergency Security Council Meeting Following Church Attack and Ado Ekiti Odour Scare

Governor Biodun Oyebanji of Ekiti State convened an emergency security council meeting to address two significant incidents that occurred in rapid succession and placed the state government under pressure to demonstrate both its security capacity and its public communication standards in moments of community anxiety and genuine danger.

The first incident was the deadly attack on a Christ Apostolic Church open-air crusade in Eda Oniyo, Ilejemeje Local Government Area, in which armed men killed the presiding pastor and abducted several worshippers including elderly persons and children into the surrounding forest. The second was the unusual, foul odour that spread across the Ado Ekiti metropolis and triggered widespread concern on social media and among residents unsure of its source and potential health implications.

The Security Council's Decisions on the Church Attack

The emergency security council meeting, attended by the Governor, the Commissioner of Police, the Commanding Officer of the Army formation in the state, the head of the Amotekun Corps, and other relevant security officials, produced a set of operational decisions designed to accelerate the ongoing rescue operation for the abducted worshippers and to strengthen security across communities bordering Ilejemeje Local Government Area where the attack occurred.

Additional Amotekun Corps personnel were deployed to the Ilejemeje axis alongside military and police reinforcements. Local hunters who possess detailed knowledge of the forest terrain in the border area between Ekiti and Kwara states were formally incorporated into the search operation under the coordination of security agencies. The governor was briefed directly on the progress of the rescue operation and directed that no effort should be spared in ensuring the safe return of the abducted persons.

The Ado Ekiti Odour Investigation Update

The security council meeting also addressed the Ado Ekiti odour incident, with the state Ministry of Environment and the relevant emergency management agencies reporting on the findings of their field investigations conducted after the government activated the emergency response line 08000606606 for residents to report their experiences.

Environmental health officers deployed across the affected areas of the metropolis were able to identify the approximate zone from which the odour originated. Initial field assessments pointed to a combination of factors including decomposition from a drainage channel and atmospheric conditions that spread the smell across a wider area than its source would normally affect. The assessment found no evidence of industrial chemical release or any substance that posed an acute public health emergency, which provided some reassurance to residents who had been most anxious about the potential health implications of prolonged exposure.

The Governor's Message to Ekiti Residents

Governor Oyebanji used the security council meeting outcomes to send a message directly to Ekiti residents about the state government's commitment to their safety and wellbeing. He acknowledged that the two incidents occurring close together had created anxiety across the state and expressed regret for the suffering of the families of the pastor killed in Eda Oniyo and the abducted worshippers whose safe return remained the government's most urgent priority. He called on residents to cooperate with security agencies, to report any suspicious movements or activities to the appropriate authorities, and to avoid spreading unverified information that could compound the anxiety already present in affected communities.
