Manchester United took another significant stride toward securing Champions League football next season with a hard-fought 2-1 victory over Brentford at Old Trafford on Monday night. First-half goals from Casemiro and Benjamin Sesko proved enough for Michael Carrick's side to claim three points against a Brentford team that pushed them hard throughout and refused to go quietly until Mathias Jensen's late long-range effort made for a tense finish.
The result keeps United in third place in the Premier League table, and just two more points will mathematically confirm a top-five finish and the Champions League qualification that comes with it, a considerable turnaround for a club that spent much of the season rebuilding under interim conditions.

Carrick Made Two Changes From the Chelsea Win
Carrick freshened his lineup with two changes from the side that beat Chelsea at Stamford Bridge in their previous outing. Harry Maguire returned to the centre of defence, and Amad came in on the right wing to replace the injured Matheus Cunha. The United manager was pleased with his team's application even as he acknowledged Brentford made their lives uncomfortable for extended periods of the match.
United carved out the first clear opening within two minutes when Kobbie Mainoo produced a stunning individual run, beating two defenders before drawing a fine save from Brentford goalkeeper Caoimhin Kelleher. From the resulting corner, the deadlock was broken. Bruno Fernandes floated a precise delivery into the box, Maguire headed it back across goal, and Casemiro was perfectly positioned to nod the ball home for his ninth Premier League goal of the season.
Sesko Doubles the Advantage Before Half Time
Brentford responded with real purpose and came close to levelling through Igor Thiago on two separate occasions in the first half, the Brazilian striker somehow failing to convert when put through one-on-one with goalkeeper Senne Lammens. It was the kind of profligacy that ultimately cost the visitors dearly.
United's second came in the closing minutes of the first half and owed everything to a piece of brilliance from Amad. The Ivorian winger won possession with a crucial tackle in a dangerous area and played the ball immediately to Fernandes. The Portuguese playmaker, with his genius for the decisive pass, slid it through to Sesko, who turned Nathan Collins expertly before firing past Kelleher into the far corner. It was the Slovenian striker's tenth Premier League goal of the season, a significant personal milestone.
Jensen Pulls One Back But It Proves Too Late
The second half saw Brentford apply sustained pressure without ever truly threatening to bring the tie level until Jensen struck with three minutes remaining. His powerful long-range effort flew past Lammens to make it 2-1 and set up a nervous finale. United, however, held firm through five minutes of added time to secure a result that edges them ever closer to the continental football their performances this season have deserved.
Fernandes' assist for the Sesko goal was his 19th of the Premier League campaign, one short of the all-time single-season record, and his seventh consecutive game with an assist, the first United player to achieve that since Robin van Persie in 2012/13. The Brentford midfielder Mikkel Damsgaard caused problems throughout and will feel his side deserved more from a performance that showed genuine quality even in defeat.
