Real Betis 1–1 Real Madrid: Late Bellerín Strike Damages Madrid’s La Liga Title Hopes

Real Madrid's La Liga title ambitions suffered a devastating blow on Friday night when Real Betis snatched a dramatic 1-1 draw at the Estadio de la Cartuja in Seville. Veteran defender Hector Bellerin struck deep into stoppage time to cancel out Madrid's lead and hand the initiative firmly to Barcelona in one of the most breathless finishes of the Spanish football season.

Madrid entered the matchday 32 fixture knowing that victory was the only acceptable result. Barcelona were watching closely, and a Madrid win would have kept some mathematical tension in the title race. Instead, the capital club were punished by a Betis side playing with heart, urgency and genuine quality throughout the night.

Match Report: How the Night Unfolded at La Cartuja

The atmosphere inside the iconic La Cartuja stadium in Seville was electric from the opening minutes. Both teams understood what was at stake. Real Madrid set up in a 4-4-2 formation with Andriy Lunin in goal, Trent Alexander-Arnold and Ferland Mendy as the fullbacks, and Jude Bellingham tasked with driving forward through the middle. Federico Valverde was industrious and determined in the Madrid midfield, constantly pushing the tempo and trying to unlock the Betis defensive structure.

Real Betis were organised and disciplined in their defensive shape, with Sofyan Amrabat and Marc Roca providing a solid screen in front of the back four. Abdessamad Ezzalzouli caused problems down the Betis left flank all evening and was one of the most dangerous players on either side throughout the contest.

Madrid eventually took the lead and appeared to be controlling the match with enough authority to see out the three points. The Betis crowd grew anxious as the clock wound into the final ten minutes with the score line unchanged. Then the night turned completely on its head.

In the 94th minute, Antony who had returned from suspension came alive on the right side and delivered a cross into the penalty area. Ferland Mendy made a costly error in reading the flight of the ball and Bellerin reacted with the instinct of a true professional. Antonio Rudiger desperately tried to clear the situation but the ball crossed the line and La Cartuja detonated with noise and disbelief in equal measure.

Title Race: Barcelona Now in Full Control

The 1-1 result leaves Real Madrid sitting on 74 points from 33 matches. Barcelona lead the table with 82 points from 32 games and still have a match in hand. The gap now stands at eight points with only five games remaining for Madrid and six for Barcelona. Mathematically, the title race is not yet over, but practically, Barcelona are now champions in waiting.

For Betis, the draw is a point earned against one of the finest squads in European football and it keeps them in fifth position with 50 points, well placed for a Europa League qualification spot as the season enters its final weeks.

Madrid's Reaction and What Comes Next

Trent Alexander-Arnold picked up a yellow card late in the match after fouling Ezzalzouli by grabbing his jersey, which could have implications for Madrid's next fixture. Federico Valverde had a glorious chance to extend Madrid's lead in the closing stages but the Betis goalkeeper Alvaro Valles closed his legs brilliantly to deny him.

Real Madrid will now need to regroup quickly as the final stretch of their season approaches. The La Liga title may be gone, but there are still points of pride and European positioning to play for as Xabi Alonso's side look to finish the campaign on as high a note as possible despite the heartbreak of Seville.
