Konyaspor 2-1 Trabzonspor: Berkan Kutlu Brace Ends Visitors' Title Hopes in Super Lig

Konyaspor delivered a damaging blow to Trabzonspor's fading Turkish Super Lig title ambitions with a well-deserved 2-1 victory at the Medas Konya Metropolitan Stadium on Monday evening, with midfielder Berkan Kutlu proving the difference through two smartly taken first-half goals that the visitors could not overcome despite a determined second-half push.

The defeat leaves Trabzonspor six points behind league leaders Galatasaray with just four matches remaining in the season, a gap that is now almost impossible to close and which effectively brings their title challenge to an end. For Konyaspor, sitting ninth in the table with 37 points, the win continues an excellent run of home form and confirms their comfortable mid-table position with several matches still to play.

Kutlu's First Brace of the Season

The opening goal arrived on 32 minutes in a moment of opportunism that reflected Kutlu's alertness throughout the match. Trabzonspor goalkeeper Andre Onana parried a long-range effort from Olaigbe and Kutlu, reading the situation perfectly, reacted fastest to nod the rebound into the net from close range. It was a goal that owed as much to positioning and anticipation as it did to technical quality.

The second came seven minutes later and showcased a different dimension of Kutlu's play. Erdogan Bardhi split the Trabzonspor defence with a precise pass behind the defensive line, and Kutlu controlled the ball inside the penalty area before driving a powerful shot into the near post past Onana. The strike made Kutlu the first Konyaspor player to score twice in a single Super Lig match this season and generated genuine celebration from a home crowd that recognised the importance of the goal given the identity of the visitors.

Trabzonspor Reduced the Deficit But Could Not Level

Trabzonspor began the second half with greater urgency and coach Fatih Tekke made attacking changes that shifted the balance of the game somewhat. The visitors had already been without injured defender Savic, a loss that Tekke acknowledged had forced him to reorganise his defensive setup. Their persistence was eventually rewarded in the 79th minute when Felipe Augusto connected with a cross from Pina to head past Konyaspor goalkeeper Deniz and bring the score to 2-1.

With eleven minutes remaining plus added time, Trabzonspor pushed hard for an equaliser that would have kept their increasingly theoretical title hopes alive. Umut Nayir and Felipe Augusto both came close in the final stages but the Konyaspor defence, well organised and fiercely determined, repelled every threat and held on for a victory that means considerably more to the home side's confidence than the visitors' title arithmetic.

Galatasaray Watch From the Top

The result effectively hands Galatasaray the psychological advantage of knowing that their closest challengers have dropped further points when they could least afford to. With four games remaining, Trabzonspor now need to win all of them and hope Galatasaray drop points in multiple fixtures, a combination of events that becomes less probable with each passing weekend.
