Nottingham Forest delivered one of the performances of their Premier League season on Friday night, tearing apart Sunderland with a stunning 5-0 victory at the Stadium of Light that effectively ended any remaining doubt about their top-flight survival and piled enormous pressure on their relegation rivals heading into the final stretch of the season.
In a contest that Sunderland were expected to control at home, Forest were utterly dominant. They scored four times in the opening 37 minutes and never once looked like relinquishing their grip on the match. It was the kind of performance that announces to the entire Premier League that this Forest team, whatever their position in the table may suggest, are no longer a side playing with fear.

Four Goals in 21 Minutes Killed the Contest
The collapse of Sunderland's defending in the first half was swift and total. The opening goal came in the 17th minute when Trai Hume turned a cross into his own net under pressure from Igor Jesus. Rather than steadying themselves after the setback, Sunderland fell apart at the seams.
Chris Wood struck next in the 31st minute after goalkeeper Robin Roefs made a catastrophic error in passing the ball directly into the path of the New Zealand striker who had the simplest of finishes into an empty net. The home crowd inside the Stadium of Light had barely recovered from the shock when Morgan Gibbs-White powered in a third goal in the 34th minute, drilling a fierce effort through a crowd of bodies that gave Roefs no chance whatsoever.
Igor Jesus then completed a devastating eight-minute period by heading home a controlled volley from a Neco Williams cross in the 37th minute to make it 4-0. Sunderland had shipped four goals in 21 minutes and the Stadium of Light was stunned into near silence.
VAR Drama and a Fifth Goal
The second half brought some hope for Sunderland when Daniel Ballard found the net to make it 4-1, only for VAR to rule the goal out after a collision between Nordi Mukiele and Forest goalkeeper Matz Sels was judged to have fouled Sels in the build-up. It was a controversial decision that drew loud protests from the home fans but the referee's call was final.
Forest managed the game with professional calm after the interval, rarely overextending themselves and remaining difficult to break down. Then in the fifth minute of added time, Elliot Anderson capped a perfect night with a cool, composed finish to make it 5-0 and complete one of the most comprehensive away performances of the Premier League season.
Survival Picture Changes Dramatically
The result sends Forest eight points clear of the relegation zone with four matches remaining. Tottenham Hotspur now occupy the final spot in the bottom three and face a visit to already relegated Wolves on Saturday, making this weekend one of the most significant in the survival battle. Jamie Redknapp on Sky Sports captured the mood when he called it the result of the season for Forest, describing the performance as unbelievable given the pressure they were under before kickoff.
Sunderland remain in 11th place on 46 points, their own survival never in serious doubt, but Friday night served as a reminder that even comfortable mid-table sides can be caught cold when the opposition brings their very best football.
Forest manager Vitor Pereira can now look ahead to their upcoming UEFA Europa League semifinal against Aston Villa with some of the pressure lifted from his squad's shoulders after a remarkable night in the northeast of England.
