Oyo State Government Confirms Lassa Fever Outbreak With One Dead as Emergency Measures Activated

The Oyo State Government has confirmed five cases of Lassa fever in the state, including one fatality, and announced that emergency public health measures have been activated to contain the outbreak and prevent further spread among the population. The confirmation, made public on Saturday April 25, has triggered an urgent response from state health authorities and the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control, which monitors infectious disease outbreaks across the country.

Lassa fever is an acute viral haemorrhagic illness endemic to parts of West Africa including Nigeria. The disease is caused by the Lassa virus and is transmitted primarily through contact with the urine or faeces of infected multimammate rats, which are found across many parts of Nigeria. Human-to-human transmission can also occur through contact with the blood, urine, faeces, or other bodily secretions of an infected person, making healthcare workers and close family contacts of confirmed patients particularly vulnerable.

What the Oyo State Government Has Done

State health authorities have moved swiftly to isolate the confirmed cases and trace all individuals who may have come into contact with the infected patients. Contact tracing is the most critical immediate intervention in managing a Lassa fever outbreak because the disease has an incubation period of between six and twenty-one days during which an infected person may not yet show symptoms but can still transmit the virus under certain conditions.

The Oyo State Ministry of Health has activated its emergency operations centre and is working in coordination with the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control to ensure that laboratory testing, case management, and public communication are all aligned with national outbreak response protocols. Healthcare workers across facilities in the affected areas are being briefed on the use of appropriate personal protective equipment and the procedures for identifying and isolating suspected cases.

Symptoms Every Nigerian Must Know

Nigerians are urged to seek immediate medical attention if they experience a sudden onset of fever, general weakness and malaise, headache, sore throat, muscle pain, chest pain, nausea and vomiting, diarrhoea, or any unexplained bleeding. Early medical intervention significantly improves the chances of recovery from Lassa fever, and the antiviral drug ribavirin has been shown to be effective when administered early in the course of the illness.

Residents of Oyo State and surrounding areas are advised to maintain high standards of food hygiene, store food in sealed containers inaccessible to rodents, dispose of garbage properly to avoid attracting rats, and avoid contact with any dead rodents or surfaces potentially contaminated by rodent excretions. Any person who has been in contact with a confirmed or suspected Lassa fever patient should self-monitor for symptoms and contact health authorities immediately if any signs of illness develop.

Nigeria's Ongoing Battle With Lassa Fever

Nigeria reports Lassa fever cases every year, with the disease being considered endemic in parts of Edo, Ondo, Bauchi, Taraba, and Plateau states. Outbreaks in states not traditionally considered high-burden areas are cause for heightened alertness because they suggest possible expansion of rodent populations into new territories or increased contact between humans and infected rodents in areas where public awareness may be lower. The Oyo State outbreak is being treated with the seriousness it deserves given the risk of escalation if the response is not swift and comprehensive.
